The quarter is almost over. I hope you learned something in the class and enjoyed it.  Now I would like some feedback from you by answering the following questions related to the class.

PUERTO RICO DOES DO IT BETTER!

When we watch, listen to or read the news, most of it is about crime, corruption, and negative aspects about our country.  I firmly believe we need to focus more on the positive things.  Puerto Rico and its people have a lot to offer.  It ticks me off when I hear people talk so negatively about the island and Puerto Ricans in general.  Sure, there are many things that could be a lot better, but sometimes people make such derogatory comments and act as if these things ONLY happen in Puerto Rico.  I just ask myself....are these people doing anything to make Puerto Rico a better place to live in or are they just complaining?

For this blog I will share some POSITIVE things about our island and will ask you to do the same.

1.    In NASA's 20th annual Great Moonbuggy Race (2013), 89 teams participated.  Both the high school division and the college division were won by Puerto Rican teams.  The high school students were from Yabucoa and the college students were from the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao.

2.  Rincón will be the first town in Puerto Rico to prohibit the use of plastic bags in stores starting in January 2015.  They have studied the impact of plastic bags on the environment and have decided to take action. This has been done in other countries and has been very successful.  I just hope the whole island decides to do the same.

3.  Sometimes people think that bigger means better.  Universities are not the exception.  Many people have not heard about Columbia Centro Universitario, or if they have, they tend to have a negative image of it.  The Nursing program is one of the best in the area.  In fact, 98% of the students at the associate degree level and 100% at the bachelor degree level passed the board exam in December of 2013.

FIELD TRIP

On Monday, October 27 was our field trip to La Fortaleza.  Those who didn't go missed out on the fun.  Those who did go, thank you for being on time and following the rules.

WHAT IS ART?

What comes to mind when you think of art?  Paintings?  Sculptures?  Drawings?  Sure, all of them are forms of art, but there is a lot more: fashion design, jewelry making, architect, graffiti, video art, photography and so on.  In this blog you will see different forms of art....maybe not what you would expect.

Here's a website that I found once while surfing on the web.  I think the guy is awesome!  Go to the website and click on his works of art.  Some of them have a video to show you how it was done.  Enjoy! Speakers recommended.

Now watch these two youtube videos.....another form of art.  The first one was made by Francisco Quinones, a student who studied graphic design at Columbia.  The second one was made by Prof. Raul Moris.  Make sure you have your speakers on.

COLUMBUS STATUE

Columbus Day, better known as Dia de la Raza in Puerto Rico, is celebrated on the island on October 13 this year.  I found an article about a statue of Columbus and since that holiday is coming soon, I thought I would include it in the blog.  The article is about a 300-foot statue of Christopher Columbus.  Nobody seemed to want the statue in the United States, but it has found its way to Puerto Rico.  Click on the link below to read the article about this huge statue and then answer the questions that follow.

Welcome to English 1102 and to blogging. During this quarter you will have the opportunity to read entries on different topics, comment on the entries, and see what your classmates think. Important information of the  course may also be provided.This will be a fun and different way to improve your skills in English. The work done on the blog will count toward your final grade. More details will be provided in class. Hope you enjoy the experience!

Here is a brief explanation on how to post your comments on the blog:

1.  Click on the title of the blog you are going to respond to.
2.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page.  You will find a box with the title "Post a Comment".
